HARRISONBURG, Va., April 9, 2004 - Junior Katie Jaworski's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) first inning grand slam and a three-hitter from junior Liz George (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) propelled James Madison University to a 4-1 win over George Mason University in Colonial Athletic Association softball action on Friday afternoon. Jaworski's grand slam was the first in the three-year history of the JMU softball program.
The Patriots gave up all the runs to the Dukes (20-18, 5-2 CAA) in the first inning, as freshman Katie George (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) single to right field to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a stolen base. Sophomore Kelly Berkemeier (Dallas, Texas/Greenhill) amassed first on a Patriot fielding miscue, and Liz George reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Jaworski then blasted a senior Miranda Fox (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) offering over the center field fence, her fifth of the season, to put JMU ahead 4-0.
George Mason (17-25, 1-3 CAA) got one run back in the top of the sixth on an RBI double by sophomore Missy Hartman (Manassas, Va./Manassas Park). The Patriots three hits came from Hartman, Dianna Austin (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) and Stacy James (Leesburg, Va./Loundon County), each hitting 1-3. Sophomore Ashley Purcell (Herndon, Va./Oakton) had the run scored for the Patriots.
Liz George pitched a complete-game and allowed one earned run on three hits. She walked one and fanned one, while improving to 8-7 on the season. Fox surrendered three earned runs on six hits in taking the loss.
The Patriots and the Dukes will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 10, beginning at noon.
