The George Mason baseball team extended its winning streak to five straight on Tuesday afternoon, easily downing the University of Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers, 15-3 at Spuhler Field. The Patriots had eight singles, four doubles and two homers in the game and got solid pitching from a trio of hurlers as George Mason now has its third five-game winning streak of the season. The previous two five-game winning streaks were snapped by nationally-ranked teams, South Carolina and N.C. State.
The Patriots (19-9) trailed early in the contest as the first four Retrievers had hits off of George Mason starter Jake Glanzmann. But the junior lefty settled down and after allowing an unearned run in the second, retired 11 of 12 batters to quell any UMBC thoughts of a comeback.
Meanwhile, the George Mason hitters were doing plenty of damage. Jeff Palumbo continued his torrid season, going 3 for 5 with three runs and two RBI. The senior shortstop, who raised his average to .405, remains on pace to break the school career records for hits, runs, at-bats, game played and games started. Chris Looze, the CAA Player of the Week, was 1 for 5 with a home run and four RBI. Adam Innerst, who was CAA Player of the Week the previous week, was 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI.
The Patriots scored five runs in the third and six runs in the seventh. In the third, an Innerst double and Robby Jacobsen's seventh homer of the year did the majority of the damage. In the seventh, Palumbo had a two-run single, Bruce Baldwin had a two-run single and Looze had a two-run homer, his ninth roundtripper of the year.
Glanzmann, who is now 3-0 on the season, went six innings, allowing seven hits, one walk and two earned runs while striking out three. He threw just 76 pitches and 56 were for strikes. Josh Morrison allowed two hits and one walk in two innings of relief and Jason Mills pitched a perfect ninth to finish the game.
The Retrievers (5-17) were led by Zach Clark, who was 2 for 3 with two RBI, and Dan Carpenter, who was 2 for 3. Kyle Wildasin was 1 for 3 with an RBI and he was the only UMB pitcher to go unscathed, as he pitched the final one and two-third innings.
The win was the 299th for the Patriots at Spuhler Field. They will now begin a seven-game road trip beginning with a three-game series this weekend at UNC Wilmington. They will face UMBC on the road on Tuesday, April 13, and then head north to face Hofstra April 16-18. They will have a chance to win their 300th game at Spuhler Field on April 21 when they host Coppin State.
