Box Score

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The 16th-ranked William and Mary (5-5, 1-1 CAA) women's lacrosse team used four goals from freshman attacker Emily Vitrano to defeat 20th-ranked George Mason (3-4, 1-1 CAA), 10-6, on Sunday afternoon at Busch Field in Colonial Athletic Association action.

The Tribe netted the first five goals of the contest, including two from Vitrano, to open up a 5-0 advantage 19:49 into the game. The Patriots finally got on the board in the 21st minute as junior attacker Kristy Manas (Harwood, MD) found junior midfielder Brandi Evans (Fort Howard, MD) in front of the net for a 5-1 W&M advantage. After a score from Morgan Watkins pushed the College lead back to five, freshman midfielder Melissa Venturi (Sewell, NJ) launched a free position shot past Tribe goalkeeper Debby Petracca for a score to make it 6-2. Vitrano's third goal of the half off a free position put William & Mary ahead 7-2 at halftime.

Mason came out of the intermission and opened the second half with consecutive goals from junior attacker Jeannine Ohler (Malvern, PA). She started what would be a four-goal run by the Patriots with a pair of scores at the 34:17 and 38:20 marks, respectively. Ohler then assisted on the next Mason goal, three minutes later, off the stick of sophomore attacker Kate Scott (Annapolis, MD) in the 11th minute. Sophomore attacker Sarah Bryant (Fairfax Station, VA) made it a one-goal game, 7-6, when she scored from an eight-meter attempt at 15:57.

William & Mary, however, responded to Mason's run as Vitrano tallied her final marker less than a minute later to put the Tribe ahead, 8-6, with 14 minutes remaining. The Patriots defense played well down the stretch, creating opportunities for the offense and capitalizing on Tribe miscues, but it wasn't enough as Mason couldn't maintain the momentum generated by its defense. W&M eventually scored the final two goals of the game for the 10-6 final.

Patriot goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Crofton, MD) stopped 10 shots, while Petracca made 11 saves. The Tribe dominated time of possession after corralling a 15-3 draw control advantage and out shot the Patriots, 31-22. Mason committed 18 fouls in the contest, of which nine resulted in free position attempts, compared to only nine fouls for W&M.

George Mason continues Colonial Athletic Association competition when the team travels to Towson for a 7 p.m. match-up Friday.
