Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's softball team (25-27, 7-5 CAA) downed Drexel (15-26-2, 3-8) by a score of 5-2 Sunday afternoon at George Mason Field. This win marks the Patriots fifth consecutive victory which matches their longest winning streak of the season.
Sophomore Ashley Purcell (Herndon, Va.) was a perfect 4-for-4 on the afternoon and started off the hitting for the Patriots in the first as she connected for a single. Purcell eventually scored off of a double from Dianna Austin (Sr.; Fairfax, Va.), which also drove in senior Kim Braxton (Lynchburg, Va.). Purcell collected her second hit in the next inning as she singled to center field, then she stole her 47th base of the year and went on to score off of an error by Drexel's junior Krista VanWert. Braxton opened up the third inning with a double to left field and freshman Megan Farrell (Medford, N.J.) hit a single to right center, which drove Braxton home.
In the top of the fifth, Drexel scored its only two runs of the game as junior catcher Bridget Flynn hit a homerun to left field, which also brought junior pitcher Elizabeth Fuller across home plate after she reached on a single to center field. Mason's final run of the contest was in the fifth after freshman Ashleigh McAfee (Vienna, Va.) doubled to left center to score Austin from second base.
Senior Miranda Fox (Hanover, Pa.) registered her 13th win of the 2004 campaign after giving up only two earned runs off of four hits and struck out two Dragons in seven innings. Freshman Jessica Sinkule pitched 2.1 innings for Drexel to collect the loss (0-9) and gave up four runs, three earned, off of five hits, while striking out two and walking two Patriots. Fuller relieved Sinkule in the third and went on to give up one run off of four hits, while striking out two batters.
The Patriots will return to action on May 1 when they compete against Hofstra in a doubleheader, which begins at 12 p.m. in Hempstead, N.Y.
