Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's softball team (24-27, 6-5 CAA) extended its winning streak to four as the Patriots defeated Drexel (15-25-2, 3-7) in both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon by scores of 2-1 and 4-1, respectively, at George Mason Field.
Drexel opened up the scoring in the first game as senior Debbie Botke earned an RBI to drive freshman Karen Morizi home, which was the Dragons lone run of the contest. Sophomore Ashley Purcell (Herndon, Va.) stole her 44th base of the season in the bottom of the sixth after walking and advanced to third on a passed ball. Missy Hartman (So.; Manassas, Va.) was up next for Mason and singled to right center to bring Purcell across home plate. Junior Stacy James (Leesburg, Va.) then hit a double to left field, which scored Hartman for the Patriots' game-winning run.
Senior Miranda Fox (Hanover, Pa.) earned the win for Mason after giving up only one earned run off of three hits, while walking one and striking out four Dragons. With this victory, Fox evened up her season record at 12-12. Junior Elizabeth Fuller (10-8) pitched the entire game for Drexel and gave up two earned runs off of four hits, while walking two and striking out four batters.
Mason started off the second game with two runs in the first as James earned an RBI after hitting a triple to center field which drove Hartman in from first. James then went on to score an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth after an error by Drexel's sophomore Stephanie Graziosi and Purcell crossed home plate from second after a single from Hartman to center field in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Freshman Megan Farrell (Medford, NJ) saw action on the mound for the Patriots for all seven innings and gave up only one earned run off of seven hits, while walking two and striking out three Dragons. Van Wert pitched the entire contest for Drexel and gave up four runs, two earned, off of eight hits, while walking four and striking out four Patriots. With this win Farrell's record improves to 10-10 on the year and Van Wert's drops to 2-7.
The Patriots will return to action on April 25 as they close out the weekend series with Drexel at 12 p.m. at George Mason Field.
