Baltimore, Md.--George Mason University's softball team (22-27) swept Morgan State (13-23) in a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field by scores of 5-1 and 9-1 in Baltimore.
Morgan State had as many errors (8), as hits (8) in the two games. Mason took full advantage to carve out the twin killing over Morgan in a game played under partly cloudy skies and mild temperatures at MSU.
In game one, Mason took advantage of a Lady Bear defensive miscue to score an unearned run and take a 1-0 first inning lead. The Patriots then pushed three runs across in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead and Mason added another run in the fifth to push their final victory margin to 5-1.
Kim Braxton went 2-for-3, scored two runs and knocked in another for Mason, while Dianna Austin was 2- for-4 with one run scored and an RBI. MSU got two hits off the bat of Keyana Smith, who knocked in Morgan's only run. Smith took the loss for Morgan while Meagan Farrell was the winning pitcher for the Patriots.
In the second game of the day, George Mason jumped on top with a three-run outburst in the third inning. Ashleigh McAfee scored a 2-out, 2 RBI single to add to the Patriots runs.
MSU would answer in the bottom of the third when Smith hit a ringing double to left field to score Veronica Brown with what proved to be Morgan's only run of the game. Meanwhile, George Mason kept on swinging as they had a four run, five hit fifth inning to increase the lead to 7-1 and the Patriots put the icing on the cake with two more runs in the sixth to put the final score at 9-1.
Mason junior shortstop Stacy James went 3-for-4 and scored two runs in the second game, while Austin had a 2-for-4 effort, scored two runs and drove in one. Mason centerfielder Ashley Purcell drove in three runs as well for Mason in the second contest. Miranda Fox earned the win for Mason, while Grace Glenn suffered the loss for Morgan.
The Patriots will return to action on April 24 when they compete against Drexel in a doubleheader with the first game starting at 12 p.m. at George Mason Field.
