FAIRFAX, Va. - With a Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse tournament berth on the line for George Mason (6-6, 4-2 CAA), senior defender Stacy Berger (Baltimore, MD) responded on "Senior Day" with a career-high four goal performance as the Patriots throttled visiting Hofstra (6-7, 2-4 CAA) 13-4 Sunday afternoon at GMU Stadium. Berger also totaled two ground balls, three caused turnovers and four draw controls for Mason, who can earn no worse than the No. 4 seed in the league's postseason event, being held May 1-2 at the highest seed. The four goals allowed by Mason is its lowest total of the season.
Junior attacker Kristy Manas (Harwood, MD) registered three scores and an assist for the Patriots, while sophomore attacker Sarah Bryant (Fairfax Station, VA) recorded two goals. Freshman Kimberly Hillier netted two tallies for the Pride, and junior Caitlin Connolly finished with a goal and an assist.
Under a hot and sunny day, both teams started out of the gate slowly. It wasn't until the 12th minute when sophomore attacker Kate Scott (Annapolis, MD) put the Patriots on the board. Her goal was followed roughly 35 seconds later by Melissa Venturi's (Sewell, NJ) netter from senior midfielder Lisa Hagan (Collingswood, NJ) for a 2-0 Mason lead. Sophomore Catherine Guerriere took a pass from Connolly at 9:36 to trim the margin to 2-1. With less than five minutes left in the frame, however, George Mason found its rhythm, scoring three straight, including the final two from Berger, to close the half with a 5-1 lead.
Manas opened the scoring in the second and Berger scored twice more as the two teams traded markers, giving the Patriots an 8-4 margin with 13:53 remaining. A shaky four-goal lead didn't shake the Patriots confidence on this day as Mason netted the final five scores of the match to post the victory. George Mason apparently wasn't in a very giving mood this afternoon as 10 of its 13 goals scored went unassisted.
Hofstra, which had only seven shots at halftime, came out of the intermission very aggressively. But, it was junior goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Crofton, MD) and the Patriot defensive unit of Berger, junior Brandi Evans (Fort Howard, MD), sophomore Michele Brady (Fairfax, VA) and freshmen Deona Donahue (Shamong, NJ) and Melissa Curry (Edgewater, MD) that limited the Pride attack throughout the contest. Dentler made 13 impressive saves in the game, while the Mason defense held two of Hofstra's leading scorers, Becky Thorn and Tara Buecker, scoreless.
George Mason is at #8 James Madison Wednesday at 4 p.m.
