Richmond, Va. -
For the second straight year, Richard Phillips' achievements at the Colonial Athletic Association's Outdoor Track and Field meet stood out above all the other competitors. Phillips, who won the 110-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash was named the Outstanding Performer of the CAA meet. The Patriots finished sixth as a team with 81.50 points. William & Mary won the meet with 185 points.
While Phillips was the top performer of the meet, he was barely the top George Mason performer. Marc Kellman won the triple jump, was second in the long jump and fifth in the 200-meters. He also was part of the third-place 4X100-meter relay team.
Also running on the 4X100-meter relay team was freshman Ryan McCoy. McCoy was also second in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump. Jonathan Martin was sixth in the triple jump and tied for third in the high jump. Quentin Matthews won the high jump and was seventh in the javelin.
Phillips, Kellman, McCoy, Matthews and Martin combined for 75.5 of the team's 81.5 points. Justin Hernandez and Andres Maldonado joined McCoy and Kellman on the relay team to account for the other six points.
Phillips has already qualified for the NCAA East Regional in both of his championship events as have Kellman and McCoy in the triple and long jump. Quentin Matthews has also qualified for the Regional in the high jump.
The Patriots are at the prestigious Penn Relays next week and then they host their lone outdoor meet of the season on May 1. The NCAA East Regional will be held the final weekend in May at Gainesville, Fla. and any athletes who advance to the NCAA Championships will travel to Austin, Texas in mid-June.
