FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason sophomore attacker Kate Scott (Annapolis, MD) scored a career-high six goals, falling one shy of tying the Patriot record, as 19th-ranked Mason routed visiting Drexel 17-8 in Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse Friday evening at GMU Stadium.
Junior attacker Jeannine Ohler (Malvern, PA) added four goals and an assist for the Patriots (5-6, 3-2 CAA). Mason senior midfielder Lisa Hagan (Collingswood, NJ) recorded a game-high three assists and tallied a goal, while sophomore attacker Sarah Bryant (Fairfax Station, VA) and junior attacker Kristy Manas (Harwood, MD) each netted two goals and one assist.
Scott scored Mason's first three goals, the last off an assist from junior defender Amanda Thornburg (Springfield, VA), to lift the Patriots to a 3-0 advantage at 19:09. Drexel (8-4, 1-3 CAA) responded with three scores in a one-minute, four-second span as junior Jen Bonini and freshmen Nicole Adams and Emily Hoesch all found the back of the net to tie the contest at 3-3 with 15:41 left in the half. Colleen Rocks and Kerry Kelly each had an assist.
After a Mason timeout, Scott scored again at 12:20 from Hagan, igniting a six-goal run from the Patriots that pushed the lead to 9-3 with 6:02 left in the frame. Scott tallied twice during the spurt, as did Ohler, who capped the spree after receiving a pass from Hagan. The Dragons' Kelly fed Chrissy Sheehan with 1:28 on the clock, trimming Mason's lead to 9-4 as the teams headed into halftime.
Bryant's free position goal to start the second period sparked another six-goal run, advancing the Patriot margin to 15-4 with 14:35 remaining. Following a few Mason substitutions, Drexel rebounded with a four-goal effort behind Hoesch, senior Laurie Bean, Kelly and Rocks, breathing new life into the Dragons, who now trailed 15-8.
But Mason's defensive unit of senior Stacy Berger (Baltimore, MD), junior Brandi Evans (Fort Howard, MD), sophomore Michele Brady (Fairfax, VA), and freshmen Melissa Curry (Edgewater, MD) and Deona Donahue (Shamong, NJ) held Drexel at bay while helping the offense tally two more scores for the 17-8 victory.
The Dragons entered the game leading the CAA in draw controls. But, the Patriots turned the tables and outperformed Drexel, 14-13, in that category. Junior goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Crofton, MD) stopped six shots for Mason. Drexel starter Maggie Koch allowed 13 goals in 37:21 and made six saves, while reserve goalie Kristen Urian stopped two shots and allowed four goals in 22:39.
George Mason hosts CAA foe Hofstra at 12 p.m. Sunday, where the Patriots will honor seniors Hagan, Berger and Kristen Olson (Aurora, CO) as part of "Senior Day" for their dedication to the Patriot program.
