HARRISONBURG, Va. - The George Mason University softball team split an extended doubleheader, with both games played into extra innings, against James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association softball action on Saturday afternoon. The Dukes won the first game 4-3 on a junior Katie Jaworski RBI double in the bottom of the eighth, while the Patriots won the second game, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the 10th inning, for a 3-1 victory.
In the first game George Mason (18-26, 2-4 CAA) scored two in the top of the first on RBI singles from senior Dianna Austin and junior Kathy Hrycyna. The Dukes cut the margin in half on an RBI double from senior Kara Schwind in the bottom of the frame.
Both teams would score a run in their halves of the third. Junior Stacy James tripled to open the inning and scored on an Austin single. The Dukes pushed their run across on a Jaworski single to left field scoring sophomore Kelly Berkemeier.
JMU (21-19, 6-3 CAA) tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI triple from junior Natalie Burd that plated pinch runner freshman Katherine Schray.
In the bottom of the eighth, Schwind walked, and was pinch run for by freshman Lindsey Romick. Romick moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Liz George, and scored on the Jaworski's hit to end the game.
Sophomore Briana Carrera picked-up the win in the circle and is now 8-8 on the season, while freshman Megan Farrell took the loss for the Patriots and dropped to 7-10.
In the second game of the twinbill, JMU got on the board first in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly by freshman Katie George. Mason tied the game in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Farrell.
Both teams had opportunities to win in extra innings as each left runners on base in the eight and ninth. In the 10th inning, sophomore Ashley Purcell reached on a JMU fielding error and a pair of triples by senior Kim Braxton and Austin gave GMU the games final 3-1 margin.
Senior Miranda Fox improved to 9-11 on the season, while Liz George dropped to 8-8.
The Patriots will return to action in a home doubleheader against LaSalle on Wednesday, April 14, at 3 p.m.
