The George Mason golf team moved up eight spots, carding a 17-stroke improvement, from 15th to finish 7th out of 23 teams at the Princeton Invitational played at the par-71, 6,390-yard Springdale Golf Club with a score of 310-293=603. Senior Craig Mason (Lorton, Va./Hayfield) and sophomore Mike Cavanagh (Perham, Minn./Hibbing) led the Patriots tied for 13th overall, each carding a two-day 147 total.
Each of the Patriots golfers improved on their first round totals in the two-day tournament. Ben Hogan (Centreville, Va./Centreville) improved six strokes from a first round 79 to a 2-over par 73 and finished tied for 36th. Dan Hurley (Leesburg, Va./Loudon County) fired a 78 after a first round 80 to finish tied for 75th.
Led by a 70 from Jason Gerken and a 72 by Creighton Page, the Princeton men's golf team held off charging Towson to win the tournament by four strokes (583) for the two-day tournament. Navy's Billy Hurley, who took a two-stroke lead into the second round thanks to a Friday 68, shot a 71 Saturday to finish at three-under-par 139 and win the tournament by three strokes over Gerken and William & Mary's Gary Barton, who each finished at even-par 142.
The Patriots will play in the CAA Conference Tournament next weekend, April 16-18 in Suffolk, Va.
