Fairfax, VA--George Mason University's softball team (17-18, 1-2 CAA) fell to Towson (16-15, 2-1) by a score of 1-0 in a Colonial Athletic Association match-up Sunday afternoon at George Mason Field.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh where junior Sam Schaukowitch doubled to center field for just the second hit of the game for Towson. Sophomore Jillian Fraser came in as a pinch runner and ended up in scoring position for the Tigers at third base after a passed ball by Mason's Kim Braxton (Sr.; Lynchburg, VA). Junior Jeanne Bosch came up to bat for Towson and hit a game-winning single, which drove in Fraser to put the score at 1-0.
Senior Miranda Fox (Hanover, PA) pitched the entire game for the Patriots and gave up one earned run off three hits, while striking out two and walking two after facing 26 Tigers at the plate. Junior Jessica Wides was at the mound for Towson all seven innings and allowed just one hit from junior Kathy Hrycyna (Jr.; North Brunswick, NJ), while walking one and striking out six Patriots. With this loss, Fox's overall record is now even at 8-8, while Wides improved to 4-6 on the year.
The Patriots will return to action in their own George Mason Invitational on April 3 as they compete against Iona at 9 a.m. and Harvard at 11 a.m. at George Mason Field. The doubleheader which was originally scheduled against George Washington on March 31 on the Patriots home turf, has been cancelled.
