Williamsburg, VA - George Mason is in 12th place after day one of the William & Mary hosted Kingsmill/Williamsburg Invitational. The 120 golfers from 22 colleges across the east coast gathered for 18 holes in unseasonably cold and blustery conditions. Wind gusts of over 20 mph and temperatures in the low 40s compounded the difficulty of the already challenging par-71, 6,769-yard Kingsmill River Course.

Senior Craig Mason (Lorton, VA/Hayfield) carded a team-best 36-40=76 to rank 24th overall and Trey Bressler fell one shot behind Mason with a 40-37=77 to place 28th after the first round. In other Patriot first-round action, Mike Kirby (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) shot a 42-37=79, sophomore Mike Cavanagh (Perham, MN/Hibbing) carded a 43-38=81. Senior Ben Hogan (Centreville, VA/Centreville) shot 42-42=84.

In team scoring, Richmond holds a four-stroke lead of second-place Georgetown, 294-298. Old Dominion and George Washington are tied for third at 303 while Cleveland State rounds out the top five with 304 strokes. George Mason sits in 12th at 313 within striking distance of landing in the top 10, only five strokes behind Towson and Boston College tied for eighth place, each at 308.

The Kingsmill/W&M Invitational concludes Tuesday with the final 18 holes with a shotgun start scheduled for 8:30 a.m.
