FAIRFAX, Va. -- George Mason University 1-8 defeated conference foe Hofstra 4-3 at Wakefield Park. Mason splits the singles matches and wins two of three doubles to earn the victory.
At Wakefield Park, the Patriots won the No. 2, 3 and 4 singles matches and the No. 1 and 3 doubles against the Pride, beginning conference play with a victory. No. 2 singles Maricel Ballester dominated her match against Vera Malezlik, winning 6-1, 6-2. No. 3 singles Jamie Delorie handily defeated opponent Adriana Sequra, 6-2, 6-2. The Patriots Katie Sloper battled Jill Spiritus through three sets, winning 7-5, 3-6, 6-4. No. 1 singles Jenn Dektas took the first set, 6-2, but lost closely contested final two sets, losing 6-7 (3-7), 5-7.
In doubles action the Mason team of Dektas/Delorie easily handled Hofstra's Reggiani/Malezlik, 8-1. The No. 3 Patriots team of Oudar/Bhalla won the match 8-4.
George Mason next plays at Richmond on March 23.
