Columbia, S.C. - The George Mason University baseball team saw no signs of rust after a week off, traveling to South Carolina for the second straight week and starting a three-game road trip off right with a 9-1 win over Radford at Columbia, S.C.
Jake Glanzmann picked up his first win of the year allowing no earned runs in six and two-thirds innings of action. He surrendered five hits while striking out two and walking three. Adam Innerst and Josh Campbell were the focal points of the offense as they combined to go 5 for 9 with six RBI. Innerst was 3 for 5, driving in four runs while Campbell was 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI. Both his RBI came on a home run.
The Patriots took the lead the first opportunity they had as Matt Cooksey led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer. They added another run in the inning when Chris Looze singled and Nick Shimer doubled him home. It became 3-0 in the third when Bruce Baldwin led off with a double and Innerst drove him home.
The Patriots ended any doubt in the fourth and fifth innings when they tacked on six more runs to make it 9-0. The four fourth inning runs were all unearned as Radford committed two errors in the inning. Campbell led off the inning by reaching on an error, Cooksey walked and Jeff Palumbo reached on an error when he attempted to advance the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Baldwin's sacrifice fly brought home the first run of the inning, Shimer was hit by a pitch to bring in another run and Innerst double to make it 7-0. Campbell's two run homer came in the fifth to complete George Mason's scoring.
Radford's lone run came in the top of the seventh via a two-base error and a single. That was it for Glanzmann who gave way to Dan Jaycox, who allowed just two hits and no runs in the final two and one-third innings.
The Patriots continue play at the South Carolina Round-Robin Tournament on Saturday, when they take on Duquesne at 7 p.m. Stacen Gant will get the nod for the Patriots.
