Virginia Beach, VA--George Mason's softball team (5-6) defeated UMBC by a score of 11-6 in its first game of the second day at the Dixie Classic Saturday afternoon and went on to drop a 2-0 decision to Delaware in game two.
Ashley Purcell (So.; Herndon, VA) led the Patriots against UMBC as she was 3-of-4 at the plate and scored three runs while earning two RBI for the Patriots. Stacy James (Jr.; Leesburg, VA) scored two more runs for Mason and earned three RBI after hitting 2-of-4 against UMBC, while Kim Braxton (Sr.; Lynchburg, VA) was 2-of-4 and scored one run, along with earning three RBI. Junior Kathy Hrycyna (N. Brunswick, NJ) was 2-of-4 which included a double, as well as a homerun to earn three RBI and score one run.
Freshman Megan Farrell (Medford, NJ) earned another win as she pitched the last five innings against UMBC and gave up two runs on five hits, while walking two and striking out four. Diana Austin started the game on the mound for the Patriots and pitched the first two innings and gave up four runs on six hits.
Against Delaware, senior Miranda Fox (Hanover, PA) pitched the entire game and gave up two runs on eight hits, while walking one and striking out three Blue Hens. Braxton was 1-of-2 in the second game, Purcell 1-of-3, Newton 1-of-3 and Fox was 1-of-2.
The Patriots will return to action on Feb. 29 for the final day of competition at the Dixie Classic in Virginia Beach, VA.
