Virginia Beach, VA--George Mason's softball team (4-5) claimed a 2-1 victory against Fordham in its first game at the Dixie Classic Tournament in Virginia Beach, VA, on Friday but dropped its second contest to Lehigh by a score of 6-5.
Megan Farrell earned the win against Fordham after pitching all seven innings and only giving up one run on nine hits after walking six batters and striking out three. Kim Braxton led the Patriots as she was 2-of-2 and earned one RBI and scored one run for Mason, while Missy Hartman scored the other run for the Patriots after a 1-of-4 showing against Fordham. Kathy Hrycyna earned the other RBI for the Patriots and Ashley Purcell was 2-of-4 in the first game of the day.
Against Lehigh, Miranda Fox received the loss as she gave up six runs off of 10 hits, while striking out three and walking two Lehigh players. Stacy James was 3-of-4 and scored two runs, while Hartman was 2-of-4, earned one RBI and scored one run for the Patriots. Liz Newton and Ashleigh McAfee both earned two RBI each and each were also 2-of-4 against Lehigh. Purcell scored one run for Mason and Lindsay Pardun also scored one run when she pinch ran for Newton in the second game of the day.
The Patriots will return to action on Saturday as they compete against UMBC at 1 p.m. and Delaware at 3 p.m. at the Dixie Classic.
