Greenville, NC--George Mason's softball team (3-4) opened up the second day of the Hampton Inn Pirate Classic in Greenville, NC, with a 7-1 win over Fairfield University and the Patriots dropped the second game to host-school, East Carolina, by a score of 3-2.
Stacy James (Jr.; Leesburg, VA) led the Patriots against Fairfield as she was 2-of-5 in the win with two runs scored and three RBI for the Patriots. Sophomore Missy Hartman (Manassas, VA) was 2-of-4 and scored two runs, while Ashley Purcell (So.; Herndon, VA) was 3-of-5 and scored a run for Mason. Kim Braxton (Sr.; Lynchburg, VA), junior Kathy Hrycyna (N. Brunswick, NJ) and Liz Newton (Fr.; Newport News, VA) all earned one RBI for the Patriots against the Stags.
Freshman Megan Farrell (Medford, NJ) earned her second-straight win as Fairfield only scored one unearned run off of three hits, while walking three and striking out two Stags. Against Fairfield, the Patriots scored seven runs on 14 hits.
In the one-point game against East Carolina, senior Miranda Fox (Hanover, PA) pitched all seven innings and gave up three earned runs on eight hits, while walking two and striking out three Pirates. Braxton was 3-of-4 and scored one run, while Newton was 2-of-3 and earned two RBI for the Patriots. Hrycyna scored a run for Mason against ECU and as a team, the Patriots scored two runs off seven hits.
The No.2-seeded Patriots will face No. 5-seeded Fairfield in the final day of the Pirate Classic in Greenville, NC, at 9 a.m. If Mason defeats the Stags, the Patriots will see action in the championship game of the Classic at 1 p.m.
