Patriot Women Maintain Lead at CAA Championships; Men Stand at Second

FAIRFAX, VA--George Mason University's women's swimming and diving team continues to sit in first place (243) after the second day of competition at the Colonial Athletic Association Swimming & Diving Championships, while UNCW men's team leads with a score of 238 and Mason stands at second (233.50).

George Mason's junior Christy Anderson won the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:04.38, while teammate Samantha Ladeveze took home the bronze in the 50-yard free (23.73). Junior Jen Irby (Towson) and sophomore Rebekah Teague (UNCW) both made the `B-cut' to provisionally qualify for NCAA's in the 50-yard free with times of 23.41 and 23.44, respectively, to finish in the first two slots.

Senior Sarah Peffer (Delaware) broke the meet record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:54.90 to claim first place, which was almost five seconds faster than freshman Lauren Timby from Old Dominion who finished second (4:59.88). Delaware's 400-yard medley relay team of junior Kristen Avioli, Peffer, junior Sara Stephens and senior Jill Fitzgerald were crowned CAA Champions with a time of 3:52.90.

On the men's side, freshman Tom Koucheravy took home the silver for the Patriots in the 500-yard freestyle (4:33.08), while senior Jeff Hicks (James Madison) finished first in a time of 4:32.09. Senior Aaron Krause of Towson claimed the 200-yard IM title with a time of 1:50.83, while Mason's Tim Norton (So.) and David Cooper (Jr.) placed third and fourth with times of 1:51.66 and 1:53.49, respectively. Sophomore Ada Brenneman (UNCW) finished first in the 50-yard freestyle, while Drexel's Anthony Perry placed first in the 1-meter diving with a score of 325.95. Sophomore John Appleman took home another bronze for the Patriots as he scored 285.65 in the 1-meter diving event.

In the final event of the night, Towson's 400-yard medley relay team of Krause, senior Frank Trionfo, freshman Chris Will and sophomore Chris Martinetti registered a time of 3:21.02 to finish first.

The CAA Championships run through Feb. 21 and will resume action with trials at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Feb. 20) and finals at 6 p.m. at the Aquatic and Fitness Center on the campus of George Mason.
