SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - George Mason opened its dual meet season Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 record at the Slippery Rock Duals held at the Morrow Field House on the campus of Slippery Rock University. The Patriots defeated host Slippery Rock 31-9 and topped Eastern Michigan 23-18. Mason led eighth-ranked (Division II) Mercyhurst 18-6 heading into the final three bouts, but the Lakers rallied to win the final three matches and earned a 21-18 victory. Mercyhurst went 3-0 overall at the event, followed by George Mason, Eastern Michigan (1-2) and Slippery Rock (0-3).
Several wrestlers had outstanding marks at the duals. Sophomore David Emison (Stafford, Va.) recorded three wins at 133 to move to 12-3 overall on the year. Freshman Joe Coughlin (Horsham, Pa.) also picked up three victories at 125 to even his record at 4-4. Sophomore Robert Henry (Dumfries, Va.) gained three wins at 149 to move above .500 at 4-2 on the season.
Senior Nick Webster (Towanda, Pa.) finished 2-1 at the meet (174 pounds) to move to 5-6 overall. Sophomore Harry Zander (National Park, N.J.) saw action for the first time this season and posted a 2-1 record at 197. Freshman Jay Chichester (Falmouth, Va.) competed at 141 and went 2-1. Also earning victories were freshman Randy Oates (Owings, Md.) (1-1 at 165) and sophomore Ryan Kittrick (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) (1-2 at heavyweight).
George Mason takes a few weeks off for exams and returns to the mats on Wednesday and Thursday, Dec. 29-30, at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C.
