Fairfax, Va.--After 26 events and two days of competition, Duke University's swimming and diving teams continue to sit in first, out of 11 teams, at the Patriot Invitational with action taking place at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. George Mason's women's team is fourth with a score of 285, while the men are sixth with 191 points.
The men garnered two first place finishes for the Blue Devils, both of which turned out to be new meet records. Kevin Arthofer swam the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 56.35 for the new record, while Duke's 200 medley relay team of David Peck, Arthofer, John Humphrey and Billy Pearce also set a new record with a time of 1:32.75. The women's team placed first in six events for the Blue Devils, which included a first place finish by Katie Ness in the 100 butterfly (56.80).
On the men's side another meet record was broken as Yale's 800 freestyle relay team of Kieran Locke, Quinn Fitzgerald, John Atkinson and Andrew Foss finished in a record-setting time of 6:47.67, over six seconds faster than second-place UMBC.
Mason's men's team was highlighted by Tim Norton as he placed third in the 400 IM (4:04.40), just .08 seconds behind Humphrey of Duke who finished second. Joe Houchin was not far behind Norton as he swam the race in 4:08.32 and collected a sixth place finish for the Patriots.
For the Patriot women, Christy Anderson placed fourth in the 400 IM in a time of 4:32.26, while Mason's 200 medley relay team of Rebecca Jimenez, Liz Ouzts, Emily Welty and Sarah Bizer finished fourth (1:49.08). The Patriots also garnered the second through fourth places in the 3-meter diving event, with Mary Campioli (439.15) claiming second place, Colleen Flack (426.70) finished third and Amanda Fielding (407.65) placed fourth.
The final day of the Patriot Invitational will begin at 9 a.m. with preliminary competition, while the finals have a 5 p.m. start at the Aquatic & Fitness Center.
