Fairfax, Va.--Duke University closed out the first day of competition at the Patriot Invitational in first place, out of 11 teams, in both the men's and women's categories after 12 events at the Aquatic and Fitness Center. George Mason stands in fifth place for both teams with 106 points on the women's side and 119 for the men.
For the Blue Devils, the women have 263 points, while the men's team has 265.50 points heading into the second day of competition. The women garnered four first place finishes for Duke, including a first place showing by Katie Ness in the 200 IM (2:04.24). Earlier in the day, Ness broke the meet record in the same event during preliminary competition as she finished in a time of 2:03.98. The men's team collected two first place nods for Duke, including a first place finish by John Humphrey in the 200 IM (1:53.27) as he edged out Kunakorn Yimsomruay of UMBC (1:53.52).
Duke broke another meet record as the men's 400 medley relay placed first in a record-setting time of 3:24.52, about two and a half seconds faster than Seton Hall's `A Team'.
Mason placed in the top-10 in five events on the women's side, while the mens amassed three top-10 finishes. The 200 freestyle relay team of Sarah Bizer, Emily Welty, Molly O'Shea and Lacy Richardson placed fourth with a time of 1:38.79, while Christy Anderson finished seventh in the 200 IM (2:10.69). On the men's side, Tom Koucheravy garnered a fourth place finish in the 500 free (4:33.77), while the Patriot 400 medley relay team of Tim Norton, David Cooper, Joe Houchin and Eric Wellington placed sixth with a time of 3:31.28.
The second day of the Patriot Invitational will begin at 10 a.m. with preliminary competition, while the finals have a 6 p.m. start at the Aquatic & Fitness Center.
