WASHINGTON -- George Mason's men's tennis team took a short trip into Washington D.C. this weekend to compete in the annual D.C. Metro Championships hosted by Georgetown and American Universities, from Thursday through Sunday, Sept. 23-26.

Among the highlights for the Patriots, senior Tim Bainton (Chobham Surrey, UK) advanced to the second round of the Flight A singles draw, where he lost in a gritty three-set match. Bainton topped Phil Holiday of Mount St. Mary's, 6-3, 5-7, 10-4, in the first round, but fell to UMBC's Fernando Ferreira, 7-6(10), 3-6, 12-10 in the round of 16. Also in Flight A was junior Stephan Dufils (Paris, France), who dropped his first round contest, 6-2, 6-3 to James Tyler of UMBC. Dufils saw action in the consolation draw, but was defeated in three sets by Mary Washington's Matt Rogers, 7-5, 2-6, 10-8.

Mason sophomore Nick Schapiro (Richmond, Va.) dropped two matches in Flight B singles, while junior Miles Hughes (Lowry, Va.) finished 1-1. Schapiro fell to Scott Gannon of Loyola, 7-5, 6-4 in the main draw and to Mary Washington's Erik Thorell, 6-0, 6-0, in a consolation contest. Hughes was bested by Georgetown's Eric Conrad, 6-1, 6-1 in the main draw, but fought out a win against Goucher College's Galen Wilson, 6-3, 6-7, 10-4.

Junior Eric Vogel (Fairfax Station, Va.) was the lone Patriot to win his first round match in Flight C singles. Vogel topped Matt Hoover of Mary Washington, 6-2, 6-2, but fell to Catholic's Emmett Donnelly in three sets in the round of 16, 4-6, 6-2, 10-3. Sophomores Rob Santos (Springfield, Va.) and Phu Le (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) posted 0-2 records in the flight.

In doubles action, Bainton and Dufils fell to Georgetown's No. 1 team in the first round of the Flight A draw, but rebounded to post an 8-4 consolation victory against Goucher. Schapiro and Vogel dropped their first round Flight B match against Goucher by a score of 8-5 and then lost, 8-1, to Loyola in the consolation bracket. Hughes and Le also went 0-2 in Flight C doubles.

Mason's men's tennis heads to Norfolk, Va. for its next match as the team competes in the Collegiate Outdoor Championships, Oct. 15-17, at Old Dominion University.
