Swimming & Diving Teams to Compete in Home Opener

Fairfax, Va.--George Mason University's swimming and diving teams will compete in their first home dual meet of the season on Oct. 29 in a Colonial Athletic Association match-up against William & Mary (M, 0-2; W, 1-1) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center at 5 p.m. The Patriots will then face East Carolina (M, 2-0; W, 2-0) the following day at home at 1 p.m.

The women's team holds a 1-1 overall record thus far this season as the Patriots fell to Navy by a score of 175-125 in Annapolis, Md. on Oct. 22 and went on to defeat Delaware the next day in Mason's first conference dual meet of the season. Against the Blue Hens, Mason compiled 149 points to Delaware's 94 and captured nine events on the afternoon. Senior Christy Anderson won the 1,000 freestyle (10:41.44) and 400 individual medley (4:38.33) and swam a leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:41.12) along with teammates, Lacy Richardson (Jr.), Emily Welty (Sr.) and Mallory Pucci (Fr.). Senior Mary Campioli captured both the one-meter (235.05) and three-meter (244.50) diving events.

The men's team has a 1-0 record heading into this weekend's match-ups as the Patriots claimed a 147-91 victory over Delaware in Newark on Oct. 23. Mason also captured nine events against the Blue Hens as sophomore Tim Norton won the 200 backstroke (1:56.26) and 200 breaststroke (2:14.14) and swam a leg of the winning 400 medley relay (3:41.41), with teammates Matthew McGillicuddy (Jr.), Matthew Kane (So.) and Mike Peterson. Sophomore Joe Houchin won the 1,000 freestyle (10:00.72) and 400 individual medley (4:11.53), and junior John Appleman captured both the one-meter (273.60) and three-meter (281.85) diving events. Also earning victories for the Patriots was junior Eric Wellington in the 50 freestyle (22.30) and senior David Cooper in the 200 butterfly (2:01.57).
