George Mason Sweeps Delaware in Swimming and Diving

NEWARK, Del. -- The George Mason University men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept Delaware Saturday at Rawstrom Pool in a meeting of Colonial Athletic Association rivals.

The defending CAA champion Patriot women (1-1) posted a 149-94 victory over the Blue Hens (1-1), snapping the Hens' six-meet win streak since last season, while the Patriot men (1-0) upended UD (1-1) by a score of 147-91. The meet was the home opener for Delaware and the first win of the season for either Patriot squads.

In the women's race, George Mason captured nine events as senior Christy Anderson won the 1,000 freestyle (10:41.44) and 400 individual medley (4:38.33) and swam a leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:41.12) along with teammates, Lacy Richardson (Jr.), Emily Welty (Sr.) and Mallory Pucci (Fr.). Senior Mary Campioli captured both the one-meter (235.05) and three-meter (244.50) diving events.

Also in the win column for the Patriots was freshman Sarah Bizer in the 50 free (25.42), senior Stefani Lubore in the 200 backstroke (2:08.45) and sophomore Liz Ouzts in the 200 breastroke (2:25.69). Mason's 400 medley relay squad of Lubore, Ouzts, sophomore Brooke Crowther, and Richardson

Delaware got victories from Sara Reed in the 200 freestyle (1:57.71), Sara Stephens in the 200 butterfly (2:10.32), Ellen Heinz in the 100 freestyle (55.07), and Meredith Law in the 500 freestyle (5:17.34).

Stephens also placed second in the 400 medley relay and 400 individual medley, Heinz was second in the 400 freestyle relay and 200 freestyle, Reed was second in the 200 backstroke (2:10.57), and Law was second in the 400 freestyle relay.

On the men's side, George Mason captured nine events as sophomore Tim Norton won the 200 backstroke (1:56.26) and 200 breaststroke (2:14.14) and swam a leg of the winning 400 medley relay (3:41.41), with teammates Matthew McGillicuddy (Jr.), Matthew Kane (So.) and Mike Peterson. Sophomore Joe Houchin won the 1,000 freestyle (10:00.72) and 400 individual medley (4:11.53), and junior John Appleman captured both the one-meter (273.60) and three-meter (281.85) diving events.

Also earning victories for the Patriots was junior Eric Wellington in the 50 freestyle (22.30) and senior David Cooper in the 200 butterfly (2:01.57).

Delaware freshman Adam Blomberg had a hand in three victories, capturing the 200 freestyle (1:43.69) and 500 freestyle (4:47.45) and swimming a leg of the winning 400 freestyle relay team (3:15.84). Also for the Hens, Levan Beridze won the 50 freestyle (48.54) and swam on the winning 400 freestyle relay team.

Both the Patriot men's and women's teams host their first dual meet of the season Saturday, Oct. 30, against CAA foe William & Mary at 5 p.m.
