The George Mason women's cross country team hosted the Mason Invitational on Saturday and two area teams battled it out for supremacy, with George Washington coming out ahead of American, as the Colonials won the meet with 40 points. American was second with 59.
American's Kelley Taylor was the top finisher with a time of 18:52.32 on the 5-kilometer course. Trina Bolton and Emily Jadwin of George Washington was second and third and the Colonials had five of the top 15 finishers. While American had four of the top 14, their fifth finisher scored just 25 points, allowing the Colonials to take first place. Virginia Commonwealth was third, with 82 points, followed by Howard, with 97, James Madison with 125, Radford with 157, George Mason with 171 and Maryland with 208.
The Patriots were led by senior Sara Hines, who was 25th overall and the 24th scorer, finishing with a time of 20:50.89. Freshman Melissa Ferry was the team's second finisher, with a time of 21:09.34, followed by Alicia York (21:15.18), Ryann Holmes (21:28.19) and Erika Woodworth (22:10.97). Julia Gaudet, Meghan Millar, Jessica Young and Danielle Turner also ran for the Patriots.
The Patriots next compete on Saturday at the William & Mary Invitational at 10 a.m.
