NORFOLK, Va. -- George Mason sent six of its seven men's tennis players to Old Dominion University this past weekend to compete in the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis Invitational of Newport News. The Patriots gained valuable experience from the event that featured several outstanding college players.
Mason senior Tim Bainton (Chobham Surrey, UK) and junior Stephan Dufils (Paris, France) saw action in the Flight A singles draw. Bainton fell to Erik Bildman in a first round tiebreak, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0, while Dufils dropped his first round match, 6-3, 6-1, against Stanley Kahl.
Patriot sophomore Nick Schapiro (Ricmond, Va.) fell to Jibade Thomas in first round Flight B-1 action by a score of 6-0, 6-2. Junior Miles Hughes (Lowry, Va.) received a bye into the Flight C round of 16, but lost to Jason Hanschmann, 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Rob Santos, who also participated in the draw, fell in straight sets to Ian Young, 6-0, 6-3, in the first round. Junior Eric Vogel (Fairfax Station, Va.) dropped a 6-3, 6-3 first round decision to Lief Hollowell in Flight D-1 singles.
All of the Patriot doubles tandems fell in early first round action in their respective flights. Bainton and Duflils lost 8-3 in Flight A, while Vogel and Schapiro (8-2) and Hughes and Santos (8-1) lost in Flight C and Flight D, respectively.
Mason's men's tennis team concludes the fall portion of its schedule this weekend as the team participates in the Intercollegiate Regional Championships, Wednesday through Saturday, Oct. 20-23, at North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
