Fairfax, VA-George Mason's swimming and diving teams both defeated James Madison at the Aquatic and Fitness Center Friday afternoon for the Patriots' final regular season conference dual meet. The women (6-3, 3-2 CAA) defeated the Dukes (1-6, 0-4) by a score of 157-84, while the men (6-2, 4-1) edged JMU (8-4, 4-1), 127-114.
Liz Ouzts highlighted the women's side for the Patriots as she placed first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:23.90 and she also collected a first place finish in the 200-yard IM (2:13.89). Jamie Downing claimed both diving events for Mason with a score of 244.80 in the one-meter and a score of 260.55 in the three-meter. Out of 13 events, the Patriots placed first in 10 events to the Dukes' three.
On the men's side, Mason's Tom Kouchervary broke his own record in the 1,000-yard freestyle against the Dukes with a time of 9:37.02. Kouchervary first set the standard on Nov. 8 against Delaware with a time of 9:41.84. Tim Norton claimed first place for the Patriots in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:43.96 and also finished ahead of his competition in the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.03). In the close meet, Mason amassed seven first place finishes to JMU's six.
The Patriots will return to action on Jan. 31 when both teams will face George Washington University in Washington, DC, at 1 p.m.
