WASHINGTON, D.C. - George Mason's women's tennis concluded play at the DC Metro Championships Sunday, which were hosted by Georgetown and American Universities, earning two doubles wins in four matches.
In flight A, junior Jamie Delorie (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) and sophomore Jenn Dektas (Maineville, OH/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) advanced to the main draw semifinals after upsetting the No. 2 seeded team of Lindy First and Sevla Gonca of Georgetown, 8-6, in the quarterfinal round. The duo next faced the #4 seeded tandem from Howard University in Kristin Harris and Shamin Mayanja. Despite a solid effort from Mason, the Patriots fell 4-8.
In the consolation draw of flight A, junior Katie Sloper (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton) and freshman Maricel Ballester (Lima, Peru) topped Mount St. Mary's team of Edmonds and Muething, 8-3.
The flight B main draw witnessed the Mason tandem of senior Deepti Bhalla (Lorton, VA/Hayfield) and sophomore Kelly Melichar (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) drop a 3-8 quarterfinal decision to George Washington's duo of Leah Woodward and Mara Frisch.
The Patriots have their first dual match of the 2003-04 season Saturday, Oct. 11, against American at the GMU Tennis Courts. Game time is set for 12 noon.
