FAIRFAX, VA ... Lory Stimson, the Executive Director of the Patriot Club and the Associate Athletic Director/External Affairs at George Mason University, has announced Max Baker will join the Patriot Club staff as Assistant Executive Director. Baker officially begins at George Mason on Monday, July 14.
Baker has been employed since November 1996 by the Potomac Cannons, the Class A professional baseball club located in nearby Woodbridge, VA. He joined the Cannons as Director of Stadium Operations and Merchandise, was promoted to Assistant General Manager in September 1998 and was named the Vice President and General Manager in September 2000.
"We are pleased to have Max joining the staff of the Patriot Club," said Stimson. "He brings a diverse background to the position and will truly be an asset from his first day on the job."
In his role as Vice President and General Manager of the Cannons, Baker was responsible for selling over $300,000 in sponsorships to national and local businesses throughout Northern Virginia. In 2001, he helped increase attendance by 15 percent over the previous season through direct sales and marketing efforts, and attendance has continued to increase each season. He also was responsible for scheduling team events and arranging travel and hotel accommodations for the team.
A native of Herndon, VA, Baker is a 1995 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) with a B.S. degree in physical education and a concentration in Sports Management. He served as a promotions assistant with the Baltimore Stallions of the Canadian Football League from August-November 1995, then he joined the Salem Avalanche (another Class A baseball team in southwestern Virginia) as an assistant in Stadium Operations in January 1996.
The George Mason University Patriot Club is the fund-raising arm of the Intercollegiate Athletics Department. The Patriot Club is charged with enhancing the visibility of George Mason athletics, engaging individuals and businesses in the Division I athletic programs and supporting Patriot student-athletes. All money raised goes to the Student-Athlete Scholarship Fund, helping to expand and strengthen the George Mason athletic program.
