FAIRFAX, Va. - For their outstanding effort in the classroom and on the field, the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association selected George Mason University senior attacker Jill Toomey (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) and junior midfielder Lisa Hagan (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) to its national Academic Honor Roll, the association announced Tuesday.
Members selected to the IWLCA national Academic Honor Roll must have junior or senior standing in college and have completed at least one academic year at the institution. A school can nominate an unlimited amount of student-athletes who have grade-point averages of 3.5 or above, but may consider only two student-athletes with GPA's from 3.2 to 3.49.
A communications major with a 3.2 GPA, Toomey's other academic highlights include being named a 2001-02 Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete, and having earned a selection to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll for five straight semesters. A 2002 and 2003 team co-captain and three-time first-team All-CAA candidate, she received IWLCA All-American and All-Region honors for the second consecutive season, becoming the fifth Patriot ever selected a national All-American and the first not named to the third team (Toomey was a second-team honoree this season). She is the only Mason athlete to earn All-American honors twice.
Last season, Toomey led the Patriots in goals scored (59), points (72) [tying her own single-season record in both categories], and draw controls (33). She shot 45.7 percent from the field, and also finished second on the team in ground balls with 45 and third in assists with 13. She completed the year ranked seventh nationally in points per game and fifth nationally in goals per outing. She holds Mason career records in goals scored (188), points (243), and draw controls (101), and ranks second all-time in assists (55).
Hagan, who is earning a bachelor's degree in biology at Mason and carries a 3.67 GPA, finished third on the team in points with 33, ranked second in assists with 15, and claimed fourth in goals scored with 18. A three-time second-team All-CAA selection, she is one of the most versatile players on the squad with the ability to play well both offensively and defensively. Her career mark of 61 assists is tops in the record books. In the classroom, Hagan boasts one of the highest GPA's of any player on the roster. She has made the AD Honor Roll every semester since her freshman campaign, and was named a 2001-02 CAA Scholar-Athlete and 2002 Verizon Academic All-District-III honoree.
George Mason concluded the year with a 9-8 overall record for its first winning season since 1998. The Patriots finished in a three-way tie for third in the CAA with a 4-3 mark and advanced to the tournament for the 10th consecutive season. Mason's nine overall wins tied the school record for victories in a season, which was set last year (9-9). This season's team also set a record for assists with 84.
