FAIRFAX, Va. - George Mason sophomore goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Crofton, MD/Arundel) and freshman attacker Kate Scott (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) swept Colonial Athletic Association honors Monday as Dentler was named Player of the Week and Scott garnered Rookie of the Week accolades for their recent performances through games of May 4. It is the first CAA weekly award for either player this season.
Dentler was solid in goal for the Patriots with a .635 save percentage and a 9.50 goals allowed average in a 15-10 win over NCAA tournament-bound American and a 10-9 upset of then No. 16 Johns Hopkins. Against the Blue Jays, she tied her career high and established a new CAA season high with 23 saves. Dentler allowed only nine goals in the contest for a .719 save percentage. She also stopped several point-blank scoring opportunities for the Blue Jays, and rejected three of six free position shots. Her save with two seconds remaining preserved the victory.
Dentler, who was named First-Team All-CAA in 2003 and was the league's Rookie of the Year in 2002, has made a name for herself as one of the premier goalkeepers in the nation. She has steadily moved up the national rankings every week in save percentage, and currently stands fifth overall at 58.3 percent. Dentler has started 16 of 17 games this year and has stopped 15 or more shots six times. Her 23 saves versus Johns Hopkins on May 3 is tied nationally for the second highest single-game total this season. She concluded the year with a 9.49 goals against average and 207 saves, which ranks second on the Patriot single-season saves list.
Scott scored six goals in two games last week, connecting at a 54.5 percent clip. She tallied a career-best five goals at American and added five ground balls. Her goal against Johns Hopkins was the first for the Patriots in the game, and helped Mason build a 4-1 lead 14 minutes into the contest. On the season, Scott started 16 games and finished fourth on the team in scoring with 22 points and ranked third in goals scored with 19.
George Mason concluded its season with a 9-8 overall record, marking the first time since 1998 that the Patriots have posted a winning record. The team's nine wins ties the school record set last year (9-9) for victories in a season. Mason also set a school single-season record with 84 assists.
