FAIRFAX, Va. - Head coach Jim Larranaga recently announced that Kevin Mickens signed, during the NCAA late signing period, a National Letter of Intent to play men's basketball for the Patriots beginning with the 2003-04 season.

Mickens, a junior college transfer out of Allegany College of Maryland (ACM), played for two seasons under head coach Bob Kirk. The 6-9, 220-pound forward averaged 13.9 points and led the Trojans with 8.3 rebounds as a sophomore, helping the team to its second straight Maryland Junior College (JUCO) Conference regular season and tournament championships, and a final ranking of eighth in the 2003 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I poll. He added 40 steals, 56 assists, and 38 blocked shots.

A native of Baltimore, MD and graduate of Mount St. Joseph's High School, Mickens, who finished the season ranked ninth in rebounding in the Maryland JUCO league, helped guide his team to a 27-3 overall record and a 16-1 mark in conference play. The Trojans advanced to the NJCAA Region XX tournament final, but lost in overtime.

Mickens won several honors in his final season at ACM, including being named the most valuable player of the Maryland JUCO Tournament, and earning first-team All-Region XX and All-Maryland JUCO Conference honors. He was co-winner of the Trojans' Thomas P. Lyden Memorial most valuable player award. As a freshman, Mickens saw a lot of action off the bench, playing in all 34 games and averaged 4.3 points and 3.4 rebounds. He also contributed 20 assists, 18 steals, and 15 blocked shots.

Mickens was a three-year starter at Mount St. Joseph's and led the Gaels to a 24-6 overall record his senior season, averaging 19 points, five boards, and two assists per game. He received first-team All-Baltimore Catholic League and All-Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association honors. He was also an Honorable Mention Baltimore Sun All-Metro Team selection.

Mickens, who will graduate with an Associate of Arts degree in general studies, will have two years of eligibility remaining with the Patriots.
