FAIRFAX, Va. - Senior attacker Jill Toomey (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) scored five goals and added three assists to lead George Mason to a 19-6 Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse victory over visiting Towson Wednesday evening at GMU Stadium. Mason snaps a two-game skid and improves to 5-5 overall and 2-2 in league action, while the Tigers drop to 6-4 and 1-3 in the league.
Tonight's contest was the Patriots most complete game all season, both offensively and defensively. Mason's 19 goals were the most they've had since topping Drexel 22-5 on March 30, 2002. Defensively, the Patriots caused 23 turnovers and limited the Tigers, the CAA's most explosive team averaging 18.4 points per game this season, to just nine points.
Nine different players scored for George Mason, which led 10-4 at halftime. Of the nine players, six tallied at least two markers in the game. Sophomore attacker Kristy Manas (Harwood, MD/Southern) finished with three goals and junior midfielder Lisa Hagan (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood) notched two scores and one assist.
Towson scored first almost two minutes into the game, but the Patriots responded with four consecutive markers to stake a 4-1 advantage at 21:42. Tiger midfielder Melissa Garner, who tied for the team lead with two goals, would later trim the deficit to two, 5-3, following an assisted marker at 16:16. Towson was held scoreless for the next 15 minutes as Mason reeled off five straight goals, including two from senior midfielder Susie Craig (Suffern, NY/Suffern) en route to its halftime lead.
The Patriots opened the second stanza with two scores, but Towson also netted two to pull within six, 12-6, with 23:03 remaining on the clock. That would be the last Towson tally as Mason scored the next seven goals.
Toomey's third point of the evening, which was a goal with 3:13 left in the first half, gave the senior her 200th career point, as she becomes the first Mason athlete ever to do so. Senior defender Frankie Bell (Great Falls, VA/Herndon) also got into the mix, scoring her first-ever collegiate goal at 27:21 of the second period off a free position. Sophomore defender Brandi Evans (Fort Howard, MD/Sparrows Point) totaled an assist, five ground balls, five caused turnovers, and four draw controls to lead the Patriots.
George Mason hosts ninth-ranked James Madison Sunday at 1 p.m. on the Patriots "Senior Day".
