BURKE, Va. - George Mason lost to Colonial Athletic Association foe UNC Wilmington Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-0 in women's tennis at the Burke Racquet Club. The Patriots move to 3-11 on the year and 1-6 in the CAA.
The match was originally slated to be played at the GMU Tennis Courts on Mason's campus, however, due to uncertain weather conditions, the competition was moved indoors to the Burke Racquet Club and shortened to a 4-1 format due to time constraints.
Three of four singles matches were finished within the allotted time with all three going to the Seahawks. The Patriots played valiantly, however, forcing each match to a third set. Doubles matches were not played.
Mason senior Dinali DeSilva (Negombo, Sri Lanka) lost her first set at No. 1 singles, 3-6, but battled back to win the second, 6-3. She only lost her service game once in the third set and her opponent took advantage, winning 6-4.
Sophomore Katie Sloper (Alexandria, VA/Bishop Ireton), playing at the No. 3 position also won her first set in a tiebreak, 7-6(5). However, she would falter in the second and third sets, 1-6, 4-6. Freshman Kelly Melichar (Burke, VA/Lake Braddock) also went deep into her match at #4, before falling 6-2, 2-6, 4-6.
Freshman Jenn Dektas (Maineville, OH/Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy) did not finish her match at #2. Dektas and her opponent each won a set to force a third, where the contest ended at 1-1.
George Mason has four matches this week, beginning with a 3 p.m. tilt at home against George Washington Tuesday, followed by a 2:30 p.m. match at American Wednesday. The Patriots host Coppin State Friday at 2 p.m. before traveling to nationally-ranked Old Dominion Sunday at 2 p.m. as part of a doubleheader with the men's team.
