Shimer Ties Record as Patriots Defeat Dragons, 10-3

FAIRFAX, VA ... George Mason junior Nick Shimer tied the school record with five hits and added two runs batted in as the Patriots defeated Drexel, 10-3, in a Colonial Athletic Association baseball game Saturday afternoon at Raymond H. "Hap" Spuhler Field.

The win was the fourth straight and the 11th in the last 15 games for George Mason as it improved to 15-10 overall and to 3-1 in the CAA. Drexel fell to 5-18, 0-4 in the CAA.

Shimer had a triple, two doubles and two singles to go 5-5 and lead Mason's 14-hit attack Saturday. Senior Evan Howard, sophomore Adam Innerst and freshman Jay Ciraco each added two hits, and Ciraco drove in four runs with a pair of doubles. It was the fourth straight game and the sixth in the last eight in which the Patriots have scored in double figures, and Mason has posted 58 runs and recorded 60 hits in its last four games.

The Patriots scored three runs in the first inning to open the scoring, with Shimer driving in two with the first of his doubles. Junior Jeff Palumbo drove in a run with a groundout in the second, then Mason added four runs in the third for an 8-0 lead as Ciraco had a three-run double.

Drexel scored its first run of the series in the top of the fourth as junior Josh Yocum walked, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on a double by senior Jason Bailey (3-4). Ciraco drove in his fourth run with a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fourth for the Patriots and Innerst had a run-scoring single in the sixth to give Mason a 10-1 lead before the Dragons scored their final two runs in the ninth. Freshmen Brett Rhodes (2-4) and Steve Johnson (2-5) each had run-scoring singles in the frame.

Sophomore Jake Glanzmann (2-3) allowed seven hits, walked one and struck out four in seven innings to pick up the win for George Mason, while senior Brett Hraban (2-2) took the loss as he allowed six hits and seven runs in two-plus innings. Junior Jeff Lamb added three hits for the Dragons.

George Mason and Drexel conclude the three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
