WASHINGTON - George Mason senior All-American attacker Jill Toomey (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) tied her single-game record for the second time this season, and fifth of her career, by scoring seven goals in leading the Patriots to a 15-10 victory over host American Wednesday afternoon at Reeves Field. Freshman attacker Kate Scott (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) added a career-best five goals, while three others each tallied one.
Scott netted George Mason's first two goals, but American (11-7) would later tie the contest at 22:34. The Patriots (8-8) scored three of the next four goals of the match to take a 5-3 advantage with 13:35 left in the period. AU trimmed the margin to one, 5-4, at 11:54 when Mason posted six straight markers to extend its lead to 11-4 with a minute remaining in the period. The Eagles' scored off a free position to close the half trailing, 11-5.
American made things interesting in the second frame, netting five of the half's first six goals, including a string of four straight, to pull to within 13-10 with 7:29 left in the game. Scott and Toomey closed out the second half scoring, giving Mason the 15-10 victory.
Patriot sophomore attacker Kristy Manas (Harwood, MD/Southern) dished out three assists, pushing her team-high total to 31 on the season. She now holds the Patriot record for assists in a single season. Gina Riitano led American with two goals and an assist. Three other players each totaled two goals.
Mason sophomore goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Crofton, MD/Arundel) made 10 saves, while American's Kathleen Finnegan had 15 saves. The Patriots out shot the Eagles, 33-2, but lost the draw control battle, 14-13.
George Mason closes out its regular season this Saturday when it hosts 16th-ranked Johns Hopkins at 1 p.m. at Robinson Field near the PE Building.
