COLLEGE PARK, MD...The George Mason softball team dropped a double-header at Maryland Wednesday night, falling 11-1 in six innings in the initial game and 8-3 in the second game.
The Patriots struck first in the opening game, scoring a run off a sacrifice fly by Kim Braxton, but he Terrapins didn't stay behind for long as they scored twice in the bottom half of the frame. Samantha Sweeney led off with a homer to right field and Jillian Callaway later added an RBI-single that scored Nneka Cardoza.
The next big inning for Maryland came in the fourth when the Terps put up five runs. Cardoza drove in two runs with a single to center, Malissa Moczulski then singled to knock in a run and Callaway chimed in with an RBI-triple.
With the Terps up 7-1, George Mason threatened in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases on back-to-back singles from Missy Hartman and Braxton and a walk to Jen Schultz, but the Patriots were unable to score.
In the bottom of the sixth, Cardoza had an RBI-double to put the Terps up 8-1 and Cyphert ended the game due to the run-rule with a 3-run homer to left center.
Rene Leveque took the loss for Mason, while Stacy James went 2-for-3 to be the only Patriot player to record a multi-hit game.
In the second game, the Terps scored a run in the first when they took advantage of two Mason errors, and in the following inning they rallied with two outs to score four runs, highlighted by Cyphert's two-run homer.
The Patriots scored once in the fourth when Kathy Hrycyna, who took the loss inside the pitching circle, produced an RBI-fielder's choice to plate Braxton and they added two more in the fifth when Braxton hit a two-run homer that also scored Jen Clawson.
George Mason opens conference play this weekend when it hosts Drexel. Saturday's double-header begins at noon, as does Sunday's single game.
