FAIRFAX, VA...The George Mason softball team held off Delaware, 2-1, in a Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) game Sunday afternoon.
Rene Leveque pitched a complete-game two-hitter as the Patriots improved to 24-20 overall, 6-6 in the CAA. The Fightin' Blue Hens drop to 16-18-1 overall and 6-6 in the league.
Leveque retired the first 14 batters she faced before Liz Winslow hit a double with two outs in the fifth. Delaware's other hit was a two-out solo home run from Laura Streets in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Leveque finished the game with four strikeouts and didn't issue a walk.
Delaware starter Jenn Joseph took the loss after working four innings and giving up two earned runs on four hits. Lindsay Jones closed out the game for the Blue Hens and threw two perfect innings with one strikeout.
Mason scored once in the third and once in the fourth to claim the win.
In the third, Stacy James hit a double and later scored on a single from Kim Braxton.
Jen Clawson drove in the Patriots other run when she singled to short to score Amanda Ayers from third. Ayers reached base after being hit by a pitch and advanced on two groundouts.
George Mason plays its final home games of the season Wednesday when it hosts Morgan State in a non-conference doubleheader that begins at 2:30 p.m.
