Philadelphia, PA...The George Mason softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at La Salle Wednesday afternoon, winning the first game, 5-4, before dropping the second game, 3-1. The Patriots are now 20-19 overall and remain 4-5 in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).
Mason, down 4-0 after four innings in the opener, scored five runs in the sixth to rally for the victory. The Patriots had some timely hits -- Kim Braxton hit an RBI-single, Tasha Galecki had an RBI-double and Dianna Austin drove in a run with a sacrifice bunt -- and also took advantage of three La Salle errors during that frame.
Galecki finished the game with two hits.
Miranda Fox, who entered the game in the fourth to replace Austin, picked up the win, while Rene Leveque recorded the save after pitching a 1-2-3 seventh.
Fox worked three innings and gave up one earned run on four hits. She also had three strikeouts and one walk. Austin gave up three earned runs on five hits during three innings of work.
In the second game, Mason scored once in the top of the first - Galecki hit an RBI-single -- but La Salle answered with two in the bottom of that frame and added an insurance run in the second en route to the 3-1 decision.
Patriot starter Kathy Hrycyna took the loss after working three innings and surrendering three runs, two earned. Leveque replaced Hrycyna and threw three perfect innings with three strikeouts.
Mason hosts Delaware this weekend in a three-game CAA series. Saturday's doubleheader starts at noon, as does Sunday's single game. The Patriots will honor Galecki and Leveque, the program's two seniors, prior to the start of Sunday's contest.
