MIDLOTHIAN, Va. - George Mason placed seventh out of 10 teams after the final round of the 2003 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championships, held April 20-22, at the par 72, 7,127-yard Independence Golf Club. The Patriots slipped one spot after holding steady in the sixth position, following action from the first and second rounds. Mason posted a 903 (309-301-293) team score, but was edged by William & Mary and James Madison, which tied for fifth-place with 897.
Old Dominion (299-288-279=866) won the event, tying for the second lowest single day team score in tournament history, and had four players shoot under par for the day. The Monarchs trailed by five strokes in the team standings after round two, but came from behind to tie second round leader UNC Wilmington, and won a one-hole sudden death playoff. ODU wins its first CAA golf title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA regionals. The Seahawks (866) placed second followed by third-place Towson (870).
Old Dominion's Geoffrey Harris, who played in the last group of the day and rolled in a 10-foot birdie put on the final hole of regulation to force the playoff, won the individual championship with sup-par scores of 70-66-67=203. UNCW, which finished second for the second straight year, had its entire team place in the top 10.
Mason junior Craig Mason (Lorton, VA/Hayfield) shot a 75-73-76=224 to finish 18th overall. Senior Chris Barr (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) rebounded on the final day to tie for 23rd (75-78-73=226). Senior Brian Marfori (Fairfax Stations, VA/Bishop Ireton) moved from the 42nd position to tie for 32nd with 230 (82-77-71). Freshman Mike Cavanagh (Perham, MN/Hibbing) and junior Carl Jacobson (Moline, IL/Moline) rounded out the Patriot squad.
George Mason's final event of the season will be held this weekend, April 25-27, at the Rutherford Intercollegiate at the Penn State Golf Course in State College, PA.
