MIDLOTHIAN, Va. - George Mason sits in sixth-place after the first round of action at the 2003 Colonial Athletic Association Men's Golf Championships, held at the par 72, 7,127-yard Independence Golf Course. The Patriots fired a team score of 309, finishing five strokes ahead of Drexel and five strokes behind fifth-place James Madison. Towson leads the pack with a score of 289, two strokes ahead of tournament favorite UNCW.
Mason junior Craig Mason (Lorton, VA/Hayfield) paces the Patriots, carding 75 after one round. He is tied for 12th overall in the individual standings with senior teammate Chris Barr (Springfield, VA/West Springfield). Also on the links for Mason is junior Carl Jacobson (Moline, IL/Moline), freshman Mike Cavanagh (Perham, MN/Hibbing), and senior Brian Marfori (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell). Jacobson is tied for 27th, Cavanagh is tied for 38th, and Marfori is tied for 43rd.
Second round play in the 54-hole event will begin Monday with final round action scheduled on Tuesday morning.
