PENHOOK, Va. - George Mason freshman walk-on Mike Kirby (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville), in only his second tournament of the season, led the Patriots men's golf team to a fourth-place showing at the Liberty/JAE Intercollegiate held at the par 72, 6,906-yard Water's Edge Country Club Tuesday afternoon. The event was shortened from three rounds to two due to a snowstorm that hit the area Sunday.
Host Liberty won the 10-team tournament with a two-round total of 606, just two strokes ahead of second-place James Madison. Mason carded 312-306=618, finishing six strokes back of third-place Cleveland State (612).
Individually, Kirby tied for second overall out of 60 individuals. He shot 74-75=149 and seven strokes behind the winner, Jay Woodson of James Madison. Patriot junior Craig Mason (Lorton, VA/Hayfield) tied for ninth with a 153 (77-76) score. Senior Chris Barr (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) tied for 18th (78-79=157), while senior Brian Marfori (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell) tied for 22nd with a score of 83-76=159. Freshman Mike Cavanagh (Perham, MN/Hibbing) fired 164 (83-81).
The Patriots travel to the Princeton Invitational, Friday and Saturday, before heading to the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, April 20-22 in Midlothian, VA.
