Track & Field Teams Finish in Top Three at CAA Championships

RICHMOND, VA ... The George Mason University women's track & field team finished runner-up for the third consecutive year, while the Patriot men's team jumped up one spot from last year to finish third at the Colonial Athletic Association Track & Field Championships, held April 18-19 at the Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, VA.

William & Mary captured both the men's and women's titles. It was the fourth straight title for the women, while the Tribe men ended a six-year run by UNC Wilmington.

George Mason's women's 4x400-meter relay of sophomore Tysha Colon (Washington, DC/HD Woodson), sophomore Sheena Davidson (Rochester, NY/Edison Tech), junior Sheena Goss (Elk Grove, CA/Laguna Creek) and senior NamTasha Joyner (Richmond, VA/John F. Kennedy) won the event in the NCAA regional qualifying time of 3:42.99 to set a new conference record. The previous record of 3:43.14 was set by George Mason in 1998.

The women's 4x100-meter relay of junior Kim Morgan (Houston, TX/Alief Hastings), Joyner, Colon and Davidson defended their CAA title, winning in 46.20 seconds. Other Patriots successfully defending CAA titles included Colon in the 100 meters, posting a season-best time of 11.97 seconds, and Davidson in the 400 meters in the NCAA regional qualifying time of 54.78 seconds.

Other winners included Morgan in the long jump with an 18-foot, 9?-inch performance and Goss in the 800 meters in 2:15.23.

Sophomore Richard Phillips (St. Catherine, Jamaica/Ardenne/Abilene Christian) led the men's team, winning the 110-meter hurdles in the NCAA regional qualifying time of 14.27 seconds and the 200 meters in 21.26 seconds. He was also the anchor of the winning 4x100-meter relay with freshman Sam Sesay (Hyattsville, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt), senior Serge Bengono (Yaounde, Cameroon/Younde) and senior Henry Harris (Cleveland Heights, OH/Essex CC). The relay won in 41.24 seconds in their first competition of the season. For his efforts in his first CAA Championship, Phillips was named the men's Outstanding Performer of the Meet.

The men's 4x400-meter relay also successfully defended their CAA title, winning in 3:13.13. Bengono and junior Wayne Wright (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) picked up their first individual conference titles with Bengono winning the 100 meters in a season-best 10.35 seconds and Wright winning the high jump with a 6 foot-6? inch performance. Sophomore Jonathan Martin (Fairfax, VA/Bishop O'Connell/Cal State Fullerton) was runner-up in the high jump (6-4?) and sophomore Quentin Matthews (Chesapeake, VA/Deep Creek) finished third (6-2?).

George Mason's men's and women's teams return to action this week at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, PA, from Thursday, April 24, through Saturday, April 26.
