Towson, Md. - Senior righthander Rene Leveque scattered eight hits and struck out five batters as she pitched George Mason University (18-14, 4-2) to a 5-1 victory over Towson University (14-15-1, 2-4) in the final game of the teams' three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at the Tigers' Towson Center Field on Sunday afternoon.
The victory enabled the Patriots to avoid a sweep of the three-game series as Towson won a doubleheader on Saturday, 4-2 and 6-3.
The Patriots gave Leveque a 3-0 lead before she even threw a pitch in Sunday's finale. Sophomore shortstop Stacy James led off the game with a double and moved to third on a single by freshman Missy Hartman. A walk to junior first baseman Kim Braxton loaded the bases. After sophomore Jen Schultz popped up to shortstop for the first out, a walk to senior Tasha Galecki drove in a run and gave the Patriots a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Amanda Ayers was then hit by a pitch to force in another run, making it a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Kathy Hrycyna drove in another run with a single to left field, knocking Towson sophomore righthander Jessica Wides out of the game. Junior righthander Beth Wilcox came in to relieve her and retired the side with no further damage.
The Patriots made it a 4-0 lead in the second inning as James led off with a single, stole second base and scored on Hartman's second single of the game.
Leveque shut out the Tigers until the fifth inning as she pitched out of several jams. In the fifth, junior shortstop Katie Mumbauer led off with a single and stole second base. A walk to senior second baseman Chris Navarro put runners on first and second base with one out. Sophomore first baseman Sam Schaukowitch lined a double to left center field to make it a 4-1 game with runners on second and third. But, Leveque pitched out of the jam with no further damage as she struck out freshman third baseman Keely Walsh and sophomore leftfielder Jeanne Bosch.
In the seventh inning, the Patriots added an insurance run as Ayers singled and later scored on an infield grounder by James.
James led the Patriots' 10-hit attack by going two-for-five with two runs scored and one RBI. Hartman also had two hits.
Mumbauer led the Tigers by going two-for-two with two walks and two stolen bases.
Towson left 11 runners on base in the loss.
