FAIRFAX, Va. - Senior attacker Jill Toomey (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) scored four goals for George Mason, but James Madison received hat tricks from Lisa Staedt, Gail Decker, and Jessica Brownridge as the ninth-ranked Dukes defeated the Patriots 12-6 in Colonial Athletic Association women's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at GMU Stadium. Mason falls to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the CAA, while Madison improves to 9-4 on the season and 4-1 in league play.

The Dukes struck first behind unassisted goals from Decker and Johanna Buchholz. The Patriots got on a the board to tie the match at 2-2 at 10:28 after back-to-back markers from Toomey. Staedt then reeled off two straight to put Madison ahead with nine minutes remaining in the first half. After a Patriot score from sophomore attacker Jeannine Ohler (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) trimmed the margin to 4-3 at 7:45, Staedt and Decker closed the period with one goal each as JMU took a 6-3 halftime lead.

James Madison opened the second half with a tally, and Mason sophomore attacker Kristy Manas (Harwood, MD/Southern) responded with her netter off an assist from junior midfielder Lisa Hagan (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood), trimming Madison's lead to 7-4 six minutes into the frame. After Decker scored at 21:08, Toomey posted two more consecutive markers for an 8-6 Dukes advantage with 8:23 remaining in the contest. Madison's Brownridge would score three of JMU's next four goals, putting the Dukes in front, 12-6, as Mason gambled defensively to gain possession of the ball.

James Madison out shot George Mason, 27-17, and won the draw control battle, 14-6. Patriot sophomore goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Crofton, MD/Arundel) stopped 15 shots, while Duke goalie Livvy King made 12 saves.
