Box Score
Towson, Md. - Senior second baseman Chris Navarro had three base hits and drove in three runs as Towson University (14-14-1, 2-3) swept a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader from George Mason University (17-14, 2-3) by scores of 4-2 and 6-3 at the Tigers' Towson Center Field on Saturday afternoon.
In the opener, Navarro had two hits and drove in a run as the Tigers won, 4-2. In the second game, she had a key RBI single and a sacrifice fly to lead the Tigers to a 6-3 win and the sweep.
Sophomore righthander Jessica Wides won her ninth game of the season in the opener as she scattered five hits. She shut out the Patriots for the first five innings and needed defensive help in the seventh to pitch her tenth complete game of the season.
Junior catcher Emily Klein led the Tigers offensively in the first game. She had a double, a triple and two runs batted in. Klein gave the Tigers a 2-0 lead in the second inning with a two-run double to left center field. Navarro's RBI single upped the Tigers' lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning before the Patriot bats came to life.
In the sixth inning, sophomore Jen Schultz hit a two-out double to drive in the Patriots' first run as freshman Missy Hartman scored after being hit by a pitch. Senior Tasha Galecki followed with a triple down the left field line to score Schultz and make it a 3-2 game. Wides then retired sophomore Amanda Ayers on an infield grounder to end the threat.
Klein led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a triple to left center field. Pinch runner Sara Foster scored an insurance run on a bloop double by senior centerfielder Michelle Cappe, giving Towson a 4-2 lead.
In the seventh inning, Wides walked the first two batters before the Tiger defense came to her rescue. Cappe made a great running catch on a fly ball by sophomore Jen Clawson for the first out. With runners on first and second base, sophomore Stacy James hit a low line drive to right field where freshman Jillian Fraser tried for a shoestring catch. The umpires ruled that she trapped the ball and Fraser threw James out at first base. Sophomore first baseman Sam Schaukowitch completed the strange double play by throwing to third base to retire sophomore Kathy Hrycyna trying to advance.
In the second game, junior righthander Beth Wilcox pitched a six-hitter in the Tigers' 6-3 win. Wilcox ended a personal seven-game losing streak by winning her fourth game of the season.
James led off the second game with a single to centerfield and scored on an infield grounder to give George Mason a 1-0 lead. But, the Tigers came back and scored three runs in the last of the first inning as Navarro singled in a run and sophomore Jeanne Bosch had an RBI double.
The Tigers added three more runs in the sixth inning as senior Marisa Moore had a pinch-hit single to drive in a run. An infield grounder by Cappe and a sacrifice fly by Navarro made it a 6-1.
The Patriots added two runs in the seventh inning on an infield out by James and an RBI single by Hartman.
Wilcox walked one and struck out two batters while pitching her seventh complete game of the season.
Towson and George Mason complete their three-game series with a single game on Sunday afternoon.
