BURKE, Va. - George Mason swept Coppin State, 5-0, in a non-conference indoor men's tennis match Friday afternoon at the Burke Racquet Club. The Patriots improve to 4-9 on the season.
Mason won each match, which was shortened to a 4-1 format due to time constraints, in straight sets. The contest originally was scheduled to be played outdoors at the GMU Tennis Courts, but inclement weather forced the match indoors.
Junior Tito Ballester (Lima, Peru) won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while sophomore Tim Bainton (Chobham Surrey, UK) captured a 6-2, 6-2 win at #2. Freshman Stephan Dufils (Paris, France) won his second consecutive match, claiming a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. 3 position. Senior Cem Akalin (Goetzingen, Luxembourg) earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles.
Senior Jorge Ramallo (Arlington, VA/Milton Academy) and freshman Miles Hughes (Lowry, VA/Jefferson Forest) completed the sweep for the Patriots, posting a straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 doubles.
George Mason visits Colonial Athletic Association foe Old Dominion Sunday at 2:00 p.m. as part of a doubleheader match with the women's team.
