Coppin State scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the first inning before Mason plated six runs in the bottom half of the frame, with Baldwin providing a two-run double and Looze contributing a two-run homer. After the Patriots added two runs in the second, the Eagles rallied with three runs in the third to cut the margin to 8-5 as sophomore Ron Quick, senior Danny Cruz and freshman Graham Johnson (2-5) each had run-scoring singles.

George Mason, however, would blow the game open as it scored another run in the third, three in the fifth and six more in the sixth for an 18-6 lead. Looze had a three-run double in the fifth and added another two-run homer (his sixth of the season) in the sixth to cap the inning. Freshman Mike Genovese got his first career hit, a two-run single, in the seventh to conclude the Patriot scoring.

Senior John Sterling (3-2) picked up the win for Mason as he allowed 11 hits and six runs (four earned) while striking out eight in six innings.
