BLACKSBURG, Va. - George Mason outscored Virginia Tech 9-1 in the second half to rally for a 13-9 victory over the host Hokies in a non-conference college women's lacrosse game Saturday afternoon at Rector Field House. George Mason wins its second straight contest to improve to 2-1, while Virginia Tech remains winless at 0-4.
Trailing 8-4 at halftime and 9-5 early in the second, Mason scored eight consecutive goals to post the come-from-behind victory. The Patriots' defense of seniors Paula Priest (Kingsville, MD/Fallston) and Frankie Bell (Great Falls, VA/Herndon) and freshman Katie Linnertz (Syracuse, NY/Cicero North Syracuse) limited the Hokies to just seven shots in the second period.
Senior All-American attacker Jill Toomey (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck), who led the Patriots with four goals, including three in the first stanza, gave George Mason a 2-0 lead six minutes into the contest, but Virginia Tech would score eight of the next 10 goals to take the 8-4 advantage at intermission.
In the second half, freshman Kate Scott (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) opened the scoring at 31:24. The Hokies' Katie Madden responded to extend the margin to 9-5. That's when Mason caught fire, as seven different players netted goals in the game's final 22 minutes, capped by sophomore attacker Kristy Manas' (Harwood, MD/Southern) score at 59:34.
The Hokies outshot the Patriots 24-9 in the first half and 31-29 overall, but Mason would hold a 20-7 advantage in shots in the second stanza.
Manas totaled two goals and four assists on the afternoon, while Scott had two goals. Five other players contributed one goal each. The Patriots took advantage of their free position opportunities, scoring four of their goals from 8- or 12-meter mark. The Hokies won the draw control battle, 15-9. Sophomore goalkeeper Meg Dentler (Arundel, MD/Crofton) had 11 saves. Tech goalie Jamie McGraw stopped nine shots.
George Mason concludes its four-game road swing to open the season as it visits Old Dominion, Saturday, March 14, at 3 p.m. to begin its Colonial Athletic Association slate.
